Today, in this economic hardship, many people have realized that raising chicken is a good idea. It is a better way of becoming self-sufficient. Unfortunately, many of us jump into the thought of keeping chicken without second thoughts. We construct chicken pens on our own only to be faced with the hard truth about chicken keeping. Before we spend any amount of money in constructing chicken pens, we should consider a number of factors.
First, one should determine the best position for placing the chicken pen. The pen should not be placed close to the main house as with time the pen produces some foul smell. There should be sufficient sunlight for the birds and not too much of it. One should also consider the yearly seasons when positioning the pen. You find that during winter, we have the north wind, which can freeze the birds. A good position is one major factor to success when raising chicken.
The other factor is determining if you can have easy access to the location of the pen mainly when you want to clean it. You should make sure that the pen is in a place where you can take food and water to your birds with ease. Chicken pens should have shelter to protect them from heavy rain. If you leave it without a shelter, you may wake up to find them dead. This is very painful in particular after spending much money.
There are two options when one wants to construct a chicken pen. It can be built in a workshop or garage or one can have it built on- site. The one built on- site is the best because once you are through it can be used there and then. The one built in the garage needs to be taken out daily and this might not be flexible due to its size and weight.
When a person decides to keep chicken, he or she should also know other factors like the different types of chicken. Some hates each other. Some hens are slow in their pecking order and must wait for others to eat thus having nothing left. It is therefore good to plan well before buying them.
You should not forget to place your chicken house where mice, rats and snakes cannot find way in. There are other predators like raccoons, which can eat your chicken. Make sure you have a sturdy chicken pen with screened windows for extra protection. If you wish to add more chicken, you should plan well and acquire a larger room.
With proper planning and good building plans, one can enjoy a great time raising chicken. Proper chicken house plans provides gradual instructions in building affordable chicken pens. Of course many people prefer to look for kits for the pens or buy chicken coops.
