I’m going to be locking them up at night in a shed for the goats, and a coop for the chickens, but during the day will they be safe from hawks and other predators? I live in Connecticut, USA. I was thinking of a llama or donkey for protection… but they’re so pricy!
Any ideas?
You cannot possibly protect your chickens if you let them free range. Your best defense is to protect them from hawks in the beginning. For your chickens I would suggest a fence around the coop and shutting them in at night — OR — build a chicken tractor (not sure how many chickens you have) that you can move daily if you like if you want the advantage of free range. It is a small house that you build an enclosed wire “yard” off of. It should be small enough for you to move easily, and most of the will have some sort of wheels or skids on them. As for the goats, again, so sort of fence would probably be your best bet. If you want them to be moved around you may have to figure out how to have a “movable” fence.
