Backyard Chicken Coops

Egg Laying Season for Hens – At what age do hens start laying eggs?

I’m building a custom chicken coop in my backyard.

Hens start laying once they are 6 months old. The laying season is usually spring/summer.

Keep a light on in the chicken coop to encourage hens to lay during fall & winter.

The eggs start out small in the beginning, but soon increase in size. Expect a healthy, egg-producing hen to lay one egg a day during the first year of laying.
